how do I find my phone number from my internet line

I have a computer connected to the internet. I need to find out what the phone number is on that line but can not connect a phone. Is there some way using the internet and the computer connected to that line.

  • I assume your internet connection is an (A)DSL connection, which runs over the copper of a regular phone line.

In that case, no, there is generally no way of finding the phone number via the Internet. (A)DSL and phone service are quite unrelated, they just share the same physical copper wire.

Only your ISP knows what your phone number is, you'll have to ask them.

Of course, your ISP could provide an Internet service to look up your number, but that is not common...

  • I don't really see how connecting a phone will get you to the telephone number, but:

If the computer that is connected is a windows machine, and if it's connected with its modem to the telephone line, you can fire up dialer which should be available by default.

Just press Win-R, they type dialer, then press Enter.

This app should behave the same as a telephone. That means, as long as you are connected to the internet, you won't be able to call with that app, as the line will be occupied.

Once you can make a call, use it to call a phone that has caller-id.

Paul Tomblin : How will that tell him his phone number?
fretje : @Paul: The guy wants a replacement for "connecting a telephone to the line"... that's what I give him, no? Btw, that's also what I said in the comments above: how would connecting a telephone get him to the number?
Paul Tomblin : The title of the question is "How do I find my phone number..." I don't think it's a stretch for me to assume that an answer that doesn't tell him his phone number is very helpful.
Sam Cogan : If he can dial a number on the analogue network, he can call a mobile phone and it will show up his number. This assumes he has an analouge modem however, which most ADSL users do not
fretje : Well, then I guess this should be closed as "not sysadmin related". Heck it's even not computer related. The guy should simply call his provider and ask, or like Paul sais: (http://serverfault.com/questions/100051/how-do-i-find-my-phone-number-from-my-internet-line/100074#100074) look at your bill.

  • Look at your phone bill.

  • This might not help you, but if you have a British Telecom line and you can get your modem or phone to dial a number, just dial 17070 and it will read back your phone number. That's some kind of engineer's testing number.
