I have to build an e-commerce website, so I wondered how I would go about this? Are there any plugins like Paypal or something that will make the transactions a bit easier?

Have a look at osCommerce for a start, it has many users and active development
stesch : And many horror stories for cold winter evenings. Scary stuff.alex : Agreed with stetsch.... It's like going back in time to the Internet 2001-ish.alex : active development? Not on the core... hasn't there been a forthcoming release for 5 years or so?csjohnst : Yeah, I guess ;-) We implemented our own system, but he is asking for plugins that he can just run withalex : I rewrote most of the front end output to be semantic and XHTML compatible with the behaviour/presentation/content layered system. Took a long time, and a lot of nested tables to wade through.PhiLho : There are many forks of osCommerce, perhaps more active or better. I am happy with Zen Cart, for example. -
You could also try Magento but in my experience it is still buggy and bloated.
I recently proposed creating a cart for myself and typed up a big list of possible features, they're available on my blog (http://alexanderdickson.com/2008/10/thinking/)
Could be a starting point on what should/shouldn't be implemented for your situation.
Dan : Magento is amazing -
Drupal Has a lot of commerce/shop plugins available. Paypal and google checkout payments are possible, as is shop/shopping cart logic.

Not exact duplicate since you are much broader in scope, but you can be interested by this thread: What’s the best free and opensource PHP ecommerce solution? (and why?).

PrestaShop is also worth taking a look. As modern as Magento, but lighter.
